New Bombay
Seen as an alternative to unburden the load off Bombay's splitting-at-the-seams state, New Bombay is one of the many satellite townships that mark as Bombay's extension. This new high-tech township is connected to Bombay by the Harbour railway line and by the Bombay-Pune highway.
The first post-independence development plan for Bombay, formulated by the Mayer-Modak Committee in 1948, suggested satellite towns north of Bombay. Ten years later, the Barve committee suggested the formation of a township on the mainland across the Thane Creek as a counter-magnet to draw away population from the already overcrowded city. This was the beginning of Navi Bombay.
Today, New Bombay (Navi Mumbai) is nothing less compared to its big brother - Bombay, in terms of development, civic amenities, and commercial importance. Owing to its rapid infrastructure development, New Bombay (Navi Mumbai) is a much sought after place for setting up residential and commercial establishments. Any plan to travel to Bombay should also include New Bombay (Navi Mumbai) in their itinerary. Here, one can witness the nurturing of a new township on hand and typical Indian village on the other.
The hill resorts Lonavala and Khandala are about one hour drive. The closest airport is the Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport at Santa Cruz (for Domestic) and at Sahar (International flights).
Weather
The weather in New Bombay (Navi Mumbai) is generally mild and similar to Bombay.
