Goa Beach Resort Travel PackagesGoa's history is a long battle of power struggle between invaders from all over the world. Around third century BC. Goa was a part of the Mauryan Empire. Later the Satvahanas of Kolhapur and the Chalukyas of Badami took over its reins. Long before the Portuguese captured Goa, it had long flourished as a port, particularly under the military protection of the Vijayanagar commander Madhav Mantri, who managed to protect Goa from the acquisitive Muslim sultans. However, in the 1470's, Goa finally succumbed to the Muslims and was ruled by Adil Shah of Bijapur. Soon, the Dutch, English, French and Portuguese, all began struggling for its possession. Ultimately, in 1508, Alfonso de Albuquerque arrived from the Portugal and captured the port, a victory that led to Goa being a Portuguese colony for 450 years.

Finally in 1961, fourteen years after the country's independence, the Portuguese had to leave and Goa joined the Indian Union. Tourist influx started in Goa in the 60s and 70s of 20th century with hippies, the spoiled children of western materialism. Behind them came the explorers, and at the end the mass tourist traffic.
With opening of Goan skies for chartered flights, number of holidayers increased exponentially in the 80s and 90s and growth in numbers is still continued. In 1987, Goa was conferred statehood and Daman and Diu was made a separate union territory.

Situated on the western coastline of India, Goa is sandwiched between the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The capital Panaji is at a distance of 592 km from Bangalore and 593 km from Mumbai. The waters of the Arabian Sea wash the coastline of Goa. It is split into two districts-North Goa and South Goa. South Goa includes Vasco da Gama Bogmalo, Margao, Colva and Benolem. Being near to the sea, Goa enjoys a maritime climate, with April and May being very hot.
