Lal Bagh Gardens

The Garden City, Bangalore offers wonderful sightseeing options to tourists and the Lal Bagh Gardens is one such spot that should not be missed during your Bangalore travel. The name Lal Bagh has been given to it for the wonderfully bloomed red roses that remain blooming all through the year in this garden. The garden has also a collection of famous Botanical species. Though the flow of visitors to the park is a regular affair, the garden gets a festive look during the Republic Day of India and on the days of flower shows that are held here.

Laid out by Hyder Ali, the beautiful 2400-acre Lal Bagh Gardens is located on the southern fringes of the city. The over 1000 species of flora, the Glass House, modeled on London's Crystal Palace, are to be seen to be savoured. Hyder Ali's son also added to the horticultural wealth by importing trees and plants from several countries. Of all the good that Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan did, the Lal Bagh Gardens is one of the best. The Lal Bagh Gardens in Bangalore were commissioned in 18th century and over the years it acquired India's first lawn-clock and the subcontinent's largest collection of rare plants. The garden also has trees that are over 100 years old.

The gardens surrounds one of the towers erected by the founder of Bangalore, Kempe Gowda. Haider Ali, the warrior-king of Mysore, decided to create this garden in 1740 on the lines of the Mughal Gardens that were gaining popularity during his time. Tourists planning to travel to Bangalore can enjoy some rare species of plants brought from Persia, Afghanistan and France. With an intricate watering system for irrigation, this garden is aesthetically designed, with lawns, flowerbeds, lotus pools and fountains. Most of the centuries old trees are labelled for easy identification. Don't miss the Lal Bagh Rock, one of the oldest rock formations on earth actually dating back to 3000 million years.
