The stepped palaces of this architectural jewel are cut into the hillside to sprawl over 3 acres/1.2 hectares. The palaces rises to 10 levels commanding the most splendid views from its rampart gardens, its imposing arcaded ramps, its rooms and terraces.

From 1986, the ruins of this Fort-Palace have been sensitively restored and reconstructed. The rooms are furnished with an eclectic mix of traditional Indian and colonial furniture, antiques, and objects d'art. Most rooms have private balconies or terraces.

On the basis of theme the rooms have been named as the Malabar room, Barsat Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Mata Mahal, Surya Mahal, Gopi Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal.
